How to read more and better in 2017

How to read more and better in 2017

Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light. —Vera Nazarian Today’s episode is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been an active reader my entire life, minus a not-so-brief period when my kids were really young. My mom was a former teacher so books were always around. My husband’s father and step-mother are both retired librarians. Books have played a key role in who I’ve become. But over the years, as my available time to read diminished, I found it necessary to develop a more intentional reading practice. In 2017, I’ve set a goal to read 52 books. This is an ambitious goal for me given the demands on my time, but with a few key lifestyle changes (e.g. not watching TV until bedtime), I can make it happen. Listen to today’s episode to learn how you can read more and better this year.       Want to read more and better in 2017? Take your business personally (just not too personally)

Take your business personally (just not too personally)

If you’re like most business owners I talk to, your business likely feels like an extension of yourself — like it’s a part of who you are. It eats up a lot of your brain power and you probably find it hard to turn off.  I bet that you’re thinking, scheming, planning and processing even while you’re making dinner, playing with your kids or walking your dogs. (or is that just me?!?)  As small business owners, we care deeply about our work and the impact it’s having in the world, alongside how it’s feeding us, both emotionally and financially. Our business matters and we take it seriously AND personally. And that’s the way it should be if you want to build a business that endures. As Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz said about business: “You can’t build something unless you take it personally.” You already know this, I’m sure. You care about your business deeply, and you are heavily invested in its success. But here’s where it can get a little messy – particularly if you’re a one-person shop. While you must take your business personally, you must also separate yourself from the business. Because you are not your business. And your business is not you. This is a critical distinction that most small business owners miss and one that leads to massive frustration, self-doubt, fear and playing small. It’s normal and natural that this happens, because as micro-business owners, we’re likely doing 85% or more of the tasks inside the business — it’s no wonder it feels like an extension of us. This is where you need to flex your...

How to create a personalized success plan (BPP #027)

“Not my monkey, not my circus!” As a business owner, sometimes it’s easy to jump on every bandwagon that comes along because we think it’s what we ‘should’ do, what will work and what will get us to success. While there’s always merit to learning from others’ experience and implementing proven tools, over the long haul it won’t be sustainable to simply follow someone else’s path. You have to define your own definition of success. And that’s what we’re talking about on today’s episode. Your business will only work if it works for you – in all aspects. Even if it doesn’t line up with the common and over-hyped success indicators we see online. A personalized success plan is tailored to you – your values and priorities – anchors into the whole picture of your life. The only way to live your life by your design is to get clear on what you truly want and then incorporate strategies, habits, checks and balances that support you. The key ingredient to have a stand-out year (BPP #018)

The key ingredient to have a stand-out year (BPP #018)

in·ten·tion·al inˈten(t)SH(ə)n(ə)l/ adjective done on purpose; deliberate; done in a way that is planned. I know, I know. We hear repeatedly how ‘this one thing’ will change everything, but when we peel back the layers it becomes apparent that ‘this one thing’ consists of a thousand other steps before we can bring it all together. The reality is that there will always be steps we need to take to get where we want to go. But how can we possibly maintain our grit and determination to get there when we are constantly bombarded with distractions and circumstances? All you need to do is have a couple of kids to realize that the road ahead is anything but straight and narrow, so how can you help yourself stay on that winding road without sliding down the slippery slope of living an average year? As Robin Sharma says, “Postponing your greatness is a recipe for heartbreak; and being casual about the life you deserve leads to casualty.” Do you feel yourself heading towards heartbreak because you have postponed yourself or your business too many time? Is this the year you decide to stop postponing the possibilities, realize your dreams or experience a slam dunk in your business growth? You know you are in charge of your own destiny, but you feel the need for something more – an injection of some kind to breathe excitement into your planning. Well, ‘this one thing’ could possibly make all the difference for you, in order to have that stand out year you so desire. “Done in a way that is planned.” That’s how the...
I give you permission.

I give you permission.

Prefer to listen? I give you permission. I give you permission to begin (even if you’re not ready). I give you permission to be bold (even if it feels scary). I give you permission to quit (even though you’ve worked so hard). I give you permission to change your mind (even if others will think you’re crazy). I give you permission to lean in (even if you’re used to holding back). I give you permission to step back (even if leaning in seems like the ‘right’ thing to do). I give you permission to do it YOUR way (even if others protest). I give you permission to take care of yourself (even if you have always taken care of others). I give you permission to stand up for yourself and your values (even if it means upsetting someone). I give you permission to really GO FOR IT (even if you’re terrified it won’t work out). I give you permission to have fun and let go (even if you’re used to taking things seriously). I give you permission to redefine what is possible (even if you’ve felt stuck for months). I give you permission to tell those gremlin voices to piss off (even if you’ve let them run the show). I give you permission to go for simplicity and ease (even if you’ve been told you need to hustle). I give you permission to honour the truest part of you that says “this isn’t my path” (even though it scares you to say out loud). I give you permission to want what you want (even if it feels selfish). I...
