Yeah. No, no, no, wait a minute, I always have tuna on toast. Nothing’s ever worked out for me with tuna on toast. I want the complete opposite of on toast. Chicken salad, on rye, untoasted… and a cup of tea.”

~George Costanza, Seinfeld

We all have things we’ve believed for so long, we no longer even question their accuracy.

In our minds, they are facts.

Hard, cold truths about who we are, what we’re capable of and what our future holds.

Some of these truths are helpful and reflect our best selves.

Most of them, however, do not.

And yet it’s the latter that tends to form the deepest grooves in our consciousness, wreaking havoc when we want to grow or change. And trying to suddenly believe something new without proof that the new way is more constructive can be challenging.

We may see light or an opening that we start to move toward, but just as we put a toe across the threshold of ‘more’, those deeply embedded ideas about who we are yank us back and slap us across the face, berating us for even contemplating expansion.

And that keeps us stuck in the status quo…wanting more, but terribly afraid to claim it.

Sometimes we don’t see it at all. We become so accustomed to how we are showing up in the world, we don’t even notice that we’re holding back, hiding out and playing small until someone else shakes us out of our complacency and offers us a bigger vision.

What then, are we to do when we’re caught between a future we desire and a reality we’ve outgrown?

Gather new evidence.
