What you need to get about decision fatigue

“When things aren’t adding up in your life, start subtracting.” ~Anonymous Think about it for a minute. How many decisions do you make every single day? I bet it’s in the hundreds. We live in a society that pulls at us from every direction. We often feel pressured to perform to a certain standard (you know you succumb once in while at least!). Whether it’s the Martha Stewart birthday party or the tough decisions an entrepreneur is faced with on a regular basis, it doesn’t really ever end. In those crazy moments, when the sense of overwhelm strikes and we’re forced into another decision – big or small – how can we trust the quality of those decisions? What can we do to eliminate decision-making so that our stress can be reduced and peace of mind improved? In today’s podcast, we will review what causes our stress to elevate, what it is that we ourselves contribute to the cycle, and some strategies to implement to improve your quality of life, reduce triggers and find opportunities to do better and therefore, be better. We have a tendency to complicate things and it just doesn’t always have to be that way. It’s the simple things sometimes that send us over the edge. Be Choosey. Really Damn Choosey.

Overwhelm isn’t created by what you think it is. It’s not because of having too much on your plate. It’s not because you have a burgeoning to-do list that keeps growing. And it’s not because you’re trying to balance kids, family, laundry, writing, clients and more. These are all the manifestations of overwhelm — but not the root cause. And as long as you focus on the to-do list or the laundry pile, you’re going to stay stuck in the overwhelm indefinitely. I’ve been an active reader my entire life, minus a not-so-brief period when my kids were really young. My mom was a former teacher so books were always around. My husband’s father and step-mother are both retired librarians. Books have played a key role in who I’ve become. But over the years, as my available time to read diminished, I found it necessary to develop a more intentional reading practice. In 2017, I’ve set a goal to read 52 books. This is an ambitious goal for me given the demands on my time, but with a few key lifestyle changes (e.g. not watching TV until bedtime), I can make it happen. I can’t go far without hearing the statement, “You do you.” It seems to be the quote-du-jour. This idea of “You do you” is similar in sentiment to Amy Poehler’s words, “Good for her, not for me.” These words come from her hilarious book, Yes, Please! The full quote reads: “That is the motto women should constantly repeat over and over again. Good for her, not for me.” When I heard this, I thought about just how true the statement is, and yet how much we fight against it. And the thing is, business is hard enough without working against ourselves, so let’s sink into what it would really mean to live Poehler’s words. After attempting to record a different episode for this week’s podcast and struggling to get it done, I had a stroke of insight about why I was feeling so indifferent to doing the work. Instead of spending the morning deep in my own work, I had instead spent it consuming other people’s content. I fell down the rabbit hole of link after link after link, and before I knew it, I had whittled away too much time ingesting information and not making anything. It might be because of something that has happened in your personal life – a baby, a divorce, a death, a marriage, or a financial change. Or it might be because of something specific inside the business from a shift in the market, an economic downturn, disinterest in the current business or a failure that stung. Where to focus when you don’t know where to focus

It’s not that you don’t want to be focused. You get how staying focused on what matters most is crucial it is to the growth and development of your business. You’ve probably tried a number of strategies to get yourself more focused. Perhaps you’ve set a timer while you work. Maybe you’ve turned off all social media distractions on occasion. You may have even buddied up with a fellow entrepreneurial friend to keep yourself accountable. And yet, you find yourself wandering. You can’t seem to complete the things you start, and you often question where you’re actually working on the right things in the first place. I am ALL for focus. I believe it’s a skill that we must develop as business owners, and those that do will lead the pack. But focus for the sake of focus isn’t the goal. If that were true, you could easily find yourself ‘focusing’ on reading cat memes on Facebook instead of writing a blog post. Or you could find yourself focusing on client work and never on the growth of your business. Focus matters. But what matters more is WHAT you focus on. And that’s where you might be getting stuck. So let’s talk about where to focus when you don’t know where to focus. I want you to be clear about where to put your valuable time and attention so that you can get the most from it and start to see results quickly. If you’re like most business owners I talk to, your business likely feels like an extension of yourself — like it’s a part of who you are. It eats up a lot of your brain power and you probably find it hard to turn off.  I bet that you’re thinking, scheming, planning and processing even while you’re making dinner, playing with your kids or walking your dogs. (or is that just me?!?)  As small business owners, we care deeply about our work and the impact it’s having in the world, alongside how it’s feeding us, both emotionally and financially. Our business matters and we take it seriously AND personally. And that’s the way it should be if you want to build a business that endures. As Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz said about business: “You can’t build something unless you take it personally.” You already know this, I’m sure. You care about your business deeply, and you are heavily invested in its success. But here’s where it can get a little messy – particularly if you’re a one-person shop. While you must take your business personally, you must also separate yourself from the business. Because you are not your business. And your business is not you. This is a critical distinction that most small business owners miss and one that leads to massive frustration, self-doubt, fear and playing small.
